10 Wrong Eating Habits That
Cause Weight Gain
During January 2009 Google search
result for the words “weight loss” is 12.100, while people only
typed “weight gain” for 1.300 times. What doest it mean? It
means that people are desperately seeking the fastest, the
easiest, and the most effective ways to lose their weight, but
at the same time, they forget the root of the real problem:
weight gain. We can successfully lose some weight after certain
period of time, however without knowing the real problem of
weight gain, we will regain the weight we have desperately tried
to lose, probably even faster than when we lose it! |
So, what is the real problem
here?
We already know that eating
habit has the biggest influence in overweight problems. That is why, the
main component of weight loss program is diet or eating management.
These are ten wrong eating habits that can regain your weight if you
don’t try to change it,
Habit #1 - Eating as an obligation

How do you spend your meal times?
Do you sit on a table, eat your food slowly while enjoying the
taste? When you see eating as an obligation, you tend to take
any food available at that time, and you must eat it without
spending too much time, cause you have a lot of more important
jobs to do than lunch! No more consideration about the food
quality, nor the quantity. This will lead to excess eating or
unhealthy food intake. |

Habit #2 - Fast foods
At this digital era, things
seems to be faster and faster everyday. We all must move quicker than
before to catch the world. Eating becomes a time-consuming activity, and
people simplify it with fast foods. We all know how bad fast foods are!
No matter how busy you are, stay away from fast foods! You can prepare
your own lunch from home, some sandwich with whole wheat bread, tuna
salad, yogurt dressing and cucumber will be a tasty and healthy choice.
See...it’s not that difficult, you just need to improvise.
Habit #3 - Eating for pleasure
There are people who make
eating as a hobby. They eat to chase the satisfaction. This kind of
people always know the best restaurants and cafe in the town. They get
satisfied after having a very delicious meal. On the other hand,
delicious meals usually use fats and other unhealthy ingredients, which
will affect your health. Anyway, restaurants run their business by
tempting you to keep coming to their places for more delicious foods!
Habit #4 - Big portion of healthy food
When you have change your diet
to healthy food, it doesn’t mean that you can eat those foods without
counting the calories. Don’t forget that even fruits and vegetables do
have calories. The best diet is a balanced quantity of carbohydrate,
protein, fat and vitamins.
Habit #5 - Fat can be burned with hard exercise
Have you heard your friends or
you yourself said after having a big meal at a party: “I got to go to
the gym after this to burn all the fat I have had”. Sounds familiar? If
you think that you can just have one sweaty session of aerobics to get
rid of all calories and fat from your last meal, then you’re wrong! The
only way to maintain your weight is to maintain your healthy diet. No
other ways! If you want to have those ice creams or cakes sometimes,
take just a small portions of them. |

Habit #6 – Alcohol
Alcohol decrease the ability
of our muscles to contract. Beer belly is usually associated with excess
alcohol drinking.
Habit #7 – ‘All you can eat’ restaurants
Be careful when you dine in a
‘all you can eat’ restaurant. Basically, we are greedy, when we know
that we can have everything, we tend to take more than what we really
need.
Habit #8 - Bulk buying
Another bad effect of F & B
business, discounts and promotion tend to force us to buy foods in
bigger portion. Buy 1 get 1 free, or 25% discounts for a dozen donuts,
etc.
Habit #9 - Garbage-type moms
At many cases, children are wiser that adults. They stop eating when
feeling satisfied, which is our body’s way to instruct our brain to stop
eating. But when moms see that there are still a lot of foods on their
child’s plate (which cost quite expensive), they tend to finish it.

Just remember, that
the food cost does not worth your health cost and your weight
loss program!
Habit #10 – Television and snacks
Interesting TV shows
attract people to sit for hours in front of television with
(guest what?...yes!) snacks. Sitting for a long time plus high
calories snacks are weight gain! From now on, place a treadmill
machine in front of your TV, and let your legs get busy, not
your mouth! Or, if you want to enjoy your TV show, let only
fruit or salad with olive oil dressing accompany you. |

explains that if you understand yourself and why you eat the way
you do, a balance will be reached and a healthy relationship
with food will result. Anyone can lose weight through dieting,
but to become the person you want to be and stay that way, a
permanent change in behavior is required -- anyone who is honest
with himself/herself knows that. Dr. Albers provides a guide to
anyone who wants to and has the determination to make this
change in his/her life.
After reading
the book, I found myself more aware of my eating patterns. In
several instances it helped me to not stuff myself silly, which
I tend to do on occasion.
